Use Google Search Console to improve your website performance: strategies for SEO and AI optimization 

Search landscapes are evolving quickly and AI results continue to claim queries that used to end in standard website visits. It’s tempting to chase every new generative optimization tactic that pops up on your feed. But as the data settles, one reality is glaringly obvious: AI models rely heavily on the same authority signals, clean site architecture, and clearly defined topics and services that Google has demanded for years.

If your site is unindexed, broken, or misaligned with search intent, AI engines will skip over you just as quickly as traditional crawlers do. Google Search Console (GSC) is your direct window into that underlying foundation. It strips away the third-party guesswork and gives you the raw, first-party data Google uses to grade your content, discover your pages, and flag technical bottlenecks. 

GSC should remain an essential part of your website content strategy and it’s important to learn how to use its data to build a resilient, future-proof site.

Why you should use Google Search Console

Third-party SEO platforms provide estimated volumes and projections, but Search Console is the only tool giving you first-party data straight from the source. Using it consistently yields several major advantages:

  • Zero-cost, first-party data accuracy: instead of relying on scraped database estimates, GSC shows the actual queries driving impressions, clicks, and visibility.
  • Direct line to site health warnings: when Google detects malware, issues a manual action, or encounters critical crawl failures, GSC is where those alerts live.
  • Fast indexing for critical pages: instead of waiting weeks for crawlers to naturally stumble upon new or updated content, GSC lets you request immediate manual inspection.
  • Clear view of real-world site usability: it surfaces genuine user experience issues, helping you fix mobile layout shifts and slow loading speeds before they impact conversion rates.

A framework for putting Search Console data to work

Align content with what searchers are actually looking for

Most guides suggest tweaking title tags whenever a page has high impressions and a low click-through rate. A deeper issue is usually at play: your page is showing up for queries it doesn’t actually answer. This happens when Google tests your page for broader search terms than what your content currently covers.

  1. Go to Performance > Search results.
  2. Click the Pages tab, select a URL with high impressions but a CTR under 1.5%, and switch to the Queries tab.
  3. Review the top search terms. Is Google showing your page for high-volume questions you only mention in passing?

What to do next: If searchers are looking for a specific answer, process, or tool that your page barely touches on, rewrite that section to address the topic directly. Aligning your content with what searchers are actually looking for turns empty impressions into qualified site visitors.

Writing new content based on Google Search Console findings

Google Search Console provides first-party data showing what your audience actively searches for and where Google already considers your site relevant. You can use this data to build high-performing content for your site.

Decoding clicks vs. impressions

Analyze the relationship between impressions (search visibility) and clicks (traffic) to find high-value content opportunities:

  • High impressions + low clicks (positions 11-30): high impressions indicate strong search demand but low clicks mean you lack dedicated content for these queries. Build a fresh, targeted post or landing page specifically catering to these keywords.
  • High clicks + high impressions: these are keywords that consistently bring in traffic. Create supporting articles that cover subtopics or specific use cases and link it back to the parent page, if applicable.
  • Emerging long-tail keywords: search terms that are typically more than 3 words and start with how, why or can I that are starting to gain impressions. Write guides and/or articles with FAQ sections that specifically address these questions.

Tips for writing content from Search Console data

Once you select a query from GSC, you can follow these guidelines to ensure the new content ranks:

  • Verify search intent: search your target term and notice whether the top results are how-to guides, products pages or list-based articles. Mirror that format without copying the content. Make sure your content is always original and provides value for users.
  • Answer the query: place a clear, direct summary answer towards the beginning of the article or page to satisfy readers and AI search models.
  • Use GSC queries for subheadings: take secondary search terms from GSC and turn them into h2 and h3 subheadings to capture multiple related keywords in a single post. But be mindful about keyword stuffing as that can have a negative impact on performance. 
  • Implement internal links: after publishing your new content, identify areas of your site where you can link to this new post or page. The internal link should be accurate and helpful to connect related content within your site. This can also be implemented on pages where you initially found the keyword data.

Uncover cannibalization before it destroys rankings

When multiple pages on your site compete for the exact same query, search engine crawlers split authority between them. This drags down rankings for both URLs in the process.

  1. Under Performance, filter by a high-value search term tied to your pipeline.
  2. Click the Pages tab.
  3. If two or three URLs regularly share impressions for that single keyword, your site is competing against itself.

What to do next: pick the single page that best serves the buyer. Consolidate valuable sections from the secondary page into it, set up a 301 redirect or adjust the internal link anchors so search engines clearly identify your main authority page.

Check for low-value URLs to fix crawl budget bottlenecks 

Publishing a higher volume of pages does not automatically translate to more traffic. Crawlers operate on finite resources. If search engines spend time reading outdated blog posts, tag archives, or thin landing pages, your core lead-generating pages are getting crawled less frequently. 

  1. Navigate to Indexing > Pages
  2. Review URLs that are flagged as ‘Crawled – not currently indexed.’ This means that your page is not indexable or that Google is choosing to not present it to users.
  3. Cross-reference these URLs with your web analytics. If a page gets zero visits over six months and serves no strategic purpose, it is actively contributing to a negative domain presence. 

What to do next: delete, consolidate, or set low-performing pages to noindex. Pruning low-value content forces crawlers to focus their resources on pages that actually build momentum.

Find technical issues in the indexing report

Copy updates won’t move the needle if the backend technical flaws prevent full-page indexing. The indexing tab surfaces the exact issues keeping your content out of search results.

  • Discovered – currently not indexed: Google knows the URL exists, but has not assigned the crawl resources to read it. This often signals weak internal linking or poor site architecture.
  • Soft 404 errors: Google evaluates a page as empty or broken, even though your server returns a standard 200 success response.

Found under the Experience tab. Pages that load slowly or shift layout as elements render receive lower priority in competitive search environments.

Resolving deep-seated JavaScript conflicts, correcting broken canonical tags, and untangling crawl loops require specialized technical SEO intervention. Without these backend fixes, newly published content may deliver minimal returns.

Audit content for generative AI results

Google officially acknowledged this shift by launching a dedicated Generative AI Performance report in Search Console in June 2026. However, as of writing, the report comes with major caveats: it only tracks impressions and cited page URLs across AI Overviews and AI Mode. It doesn’t feature anything about specific queries and also excludes data on clicks, CTR, average position.

Use Search Console to evaluate how easily machine-readable your content is:

  • Filter for conversational query patterns. Parse through your query report for long-tail questions. For example, terms that start with “how, why, what is the difference between.”
    • Filter for long-tail query length: Use this custom Regex filter to isolate queries that are longer than 8 words. High word counts typically reflect natural language phrasing used in AI searches: ^(\S+\s+){8,}\S+$
    • Filter for question- and comparison-shaped queries: Use this Regex filter to catch search terms starting with question words or intent triggers like comparisons: ^(who|what|when|where|why|how)\b|vs\b|versus\b|compare\b|comparison\b|difference between\b
  • Audit structured data status: Review the Enhancements tab for schema markup errors. While many guides state that flawless schema is mandatory for AI visibility, whether missing or invalid markup actually prevents AI agents from processing core product, service, or business details is questionable.
