A small business guide to secure and private web analytics
Digital privacy isn’t just a concern for big corporations – it’s a growing priority for smaller businesses, too. If you’re using website analytics tools like Google Analytics, you’re likely collecting valuable customer data that helps you inform your website content decisions. It’s important to make sure you’re collecting this data in a secure way.
Failing to set up proper data retention settings or using tracking tools without user consent may put your customers’ privacy at risk, which we don’t want. The good news is that you can take measures to guarantee your site is secure while still ensuring compliance with privacy laws.
Our latest guide breaks down simple security measures you can implement today.

Background on HIPAA
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act was signed in 1996 to help protect individuals’ medical records and personal health information (PHI). At the time, more health records were recorded using paper. Lawmakers recognized that the healthcare industry was quickly moving to digital systems. This poses potential privacy concerns.
As healthcare continues to rely on digital tools (telehealth, patient portals, digital marketing) HIPAA regulations are more relevant than ever. Read more about the history of HIPAA from The HIPAA Journal’s website.
Building a More Human Web
Members of our accessibility team recently attended Axe-Con, a digital web accessibility conference hosted by Deque.
One of our favorite sessions was from author and speaker David Dylan Thomas, called “No, Seriously, F*ck Engagement: Building a More Human Web.” In under an hour, Thomas explores the idea of a “person-oriented” web (in contrast to our current “thing-oriented” system), how marketing engagement KPIs can perpetuate oppression, and what we as marketers and web users can do to embrace a more sustainable and humane internet.
The session is available on demand, along with the rest of the conference’s programming, for free on the Axe-Con website (registration required).
